Massage and Specific Health Conditions
Clinical research has shown that massage therapy has benefits for many serious medical conditions. It alleviates pain and aids in the healing process.
Massage has been found to be especially effective for patients with these conditions:
Low back pain
Other Kinds of Cancer
Heart bypass surgery
Low Back Pain
Chronic low back pain sufferers find enduring results from massage therapy, according to a study conducted by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Center for Health Studies. The researchers plan to determine the specific components of massage therapy that contribute to its effectiveness.
A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine supported the idea that massage therapy produces better results for low back pain than other therapies, including acupuncture and spinal modification.
Massage promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety in patients with varying kinds of cancer, and has proven especially effective breast cancer survivors. Research shows therapeutic massage is an effective complement to traditional medical care for women undergoing lumpectomy, mastectomy or breast reconstruction. Pre-surgery, massage relaxes muscle tissue and increases the flow of lymph. Post surgery, women who apply specialized lymph drainage techniques from a well-trained massage therapist to their treatment may experience less pain and swelling.
In a study performed by the University of Miami School of Medicine, breast cancer patients who were massaged three times a week reported lower levels of depression, anxiety and anger. Benefits of massage after breast cancer treatment also include boosting the immune system and helping women reconnect with their bodies.
Other Kinds of Cancer
Researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center asked cancer patients about the severity of their symptoms before and after receiving massage therapy, and patients reported reduced levels of anxiety, pain, fatigue, depression and nausea.
Heart Bypass Surgery
In-patient massage treatment performed after heart bypass surgery helps reduce pain and muscle spasms, confirmed by a pilot study conducted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Because of its effectiveness, 60 percent of the massage group in this study expressed a willingness to pay for massage therapy out-of-pocket.
A review of more than a dozen studies concluded that massage therapy helps relieve depression and anxiety by affecting the body?s biochemistry. Researchers at the University of Miami School of Medicine reviewed studies that measured the stress hormone cortisol in participants before and immediately after massage and found that the therapy lowered levels by up to 53 percent. Massage also increased serotonin and dopamine, which are both neurotransmitters that help reduce depression.
In a 2006 study published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine, massage therapy recipients exhibited fewer migraines and better sleep quality than the control group. A 1998 study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience found that massage therapy decreased the occurrence of headaches, sleep disturbances and distress symptoms in adults with migraines.
A 2004 study by the University of Miami School of Medicine explored the effects of massage therapy on carpel tunnel syndrome. The study concluded that carpal tunnel patients receiving massage experienced less pain, reduced symptoms and better grip strength than patients that did not receive massage.
Research has shown that hypertensive patients who received three 10-minute back massages a week had a reduction in blood pressure, compared to patients who tried to increase relaxation without massage.
Research indicates that massage can help boost immune system strength by increasing the activity level of the body's natural "killer T cells"; which fight off tumors and viruses.
Massage therapy benefits that are applicable to sufferers of any kind of pain include the stimulation of endorphin production in the brain and the encouragement of patient confidence in improving their condition.
As with any medical treatment, patients should consult with their doctors before adding massage to their pain management.

A Powerful Ally
There's no denying the power of bodywork. Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it (pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic) or the reasons we seek it out (a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management), massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen.
Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be idealistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This translates into:
Enhanced sleep quality.
Furthermore, clients often report a sense of perspective and clarity after receiving a massage. The emotional balance bodywork provides can often be just as vital and valuable as the more tangible physical benefits.
In response to massage, specific physiological and chemical changes cascade throughout the body, with profound effects. Research shows that with massage:
Arthritis sufferers note fewer aches and less stiffness and pain.
Asthmatic children show better pulmonary function and increased peak air flow.
Burn injury patients report reduced pain, itching, and anxiety.
High blood pressure patients demonstrate lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones.
Premenstrual syndrome sufferers have decreased water retention and cramping.
Preterm infants have improved weight gain.
Research continues to show the enormous benefits of touch, which range from treating chronic diseases, neurological disorders, and injuries, to alleviating the tensions of modern lifes. Consequently, the medical community is actively embracing bodywork, and massage is becoming an integral part of hospice care and neonatal intensive care units. Many hospitals are also incorporating on-site massage practitioners and even spas to treat post surgery or pain patients as part of the recovery process.
Massage Therapy for Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a chronic syndrome characterized by generalized pain, joint rigidity, intense fatigue, sleep alterations, headache, spastic colon, craniomandibular dysfunction, anxiety, and depression. This study demonstrated that massage-myofascial release techniques improved pain and quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia. The study found reductions in sensitivity to pain at tender points in patients with fibromyalgia. Patients in the massage group received 90-minute massage for 20 weeks. Immediately after treatment and one month after the massage program, anxiety levels, quality of sleep, pain and quality of life were still improved. Here are the top ten physical and mental health benefits of massage:
Promotes deeper breathing
Deep breathing is vital to ensure that oxygen circulates easily throughout your body, and encourages healing and growth in the process. Decreased oxygen circulation results in headaches, tension aches, and random muscle pain that can accumulate into a significant problem over time. By enhancing your oxygen intake, you will naturally promote the release of toxins and negative energy within the body.
Although massage should never be used as a replacement for a chiropractic diagnosis, posture can slowly and naturally improve as the spine and muscles around the spine become more flexible and supple. Improved posture also aids in breathing and less tension throughout the body.
An improvement in both blood and lymph circulation helps your body gain strength and maximizes your energy level. Especially during the winter months when circulation and metabolisms may be slower, massage can help in removing toxins in the blood and encouraging fresh energy to circulate easily. Efficient circulation also helps in muscle recovery, growth, and promotes the natural healing process.
Enhances skin tone and skin health
When using high-quality oils and creams, massage therapists can significantly improve the tone and health of your skin after just a few massage sessions. Skin cells are revitalized, moisturized, and replenished naturally. Choose Vitamin E and natural grapeseed oil bases for maximum benefits.
Increases and promotes joint flexibility
Repetitive stress or overused joints can stunt growth and create problems later. Massage helps to relieve stored tension and encourages flexibility of the joints after rest. Any soreness experienced after a massage can be indication that these are tension spots for you, and focusing on these areas on your next massage will increase joint recovery. There are even some special oil formulations to target joints, so do check with your massage therapist beforehand to discuss options.
Enhances a calm mind
Encouraging a calm mind creates an avenue for creativity; it is during these times that our minds are most conducive to creative thinking, developing plans, organizing thoughts, and reducing stressful thoughts. Massage can encourage this state of mind by relaxing the entire body.
As a natural deep relaxant, a successful massage can significantly reduce anxiety. Usually, anxiety is stored in some key areas of the body; the lower back, shoulders, abdomen, and neck. By relieving these areas of tension, the mind can 'let go' of anxiety and experience a light, almost freeing sensation.
The mind-body connection is often overlooked in today's fast-paced society. From the minute you wake up, to the moment you go to bed, it is easy to slip into 'mind-only' mode. When you re-establish the connection with your body, you will experience greater ease of movement, a more centered feeling, and an enhanced feeling of well-being.
Promotes mental alertness
Although a massage can bring you into a state of deep relaxation, this is also a state of heightened mental alertness. Your mind is relaxed and calm, but acutely aware and in this state, capable of solving even the toughest problems!
Increases peace of mind
With your ability to feel relaxed and naturally aware, peace of mind becomes a necessary result. Peace of mind can be defined as a sense of calm well-being and just feeling good naturally.
Satisfies need for human touch
As human beings, we all need to feel the touch of another human being. This can range from a simple hug, handshake, or a nurturing touch. A massage encourages this type of connection and increases your appreciation for this human need.
Therapeutic massage can help with a wide range of medical conditions, including:
Aching muscles * Arthritis * Anxiety and stress * Asthma * Cancer * Carpal tunnel syndrome * Chronic pain * Depression * Digestive disorders * Fibromyalgia * Headaches, especially tension-related * Insomnia * Low back pain * Neck pain/stiffness * Plantar fasciitis * Pregnancy and postpartum * Reduced range of motion * Scar tissue * Sciatica * Sports injuries * Strains and sprains * Surgery recovery * Temporomandibular (TMJ) joint dysfunction
Increase the Benefits with Frequent Visits
Getting a massage can do you a world of good. And getting massage frequently can do even more. This is the beauty of bodywork. Taking part in this form of regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you'll be and how youthful you'll remain with each passing year. Budgeting time and money for bodywork at consistent intervals is truly an investment in your health. And remember: just because massage feels like a pampering treat doesn't mean it is any less therapeutic. Consider massage appointments a necessary piece of your health and wellness plan, and work with your practitioner to establish a treatment schedule that best meets your needs.
The most common type of massage therapy, this massage will melt your tension away using an array of long, gentle, gliding strokes, kneading, rolling and percussion to improve circulation and lymphatic flow. The benefits of this type of massage are wide-ranging and include stress relief, regulated breathing and circulation, enhanced mental clarity, greater flexibility and skin elasticity. This massage is great for those new to massage therapy or for people simply looking to relax.
**Deep Tissue Massage**
A form of massage that aims to relieve tension in the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue by utilizing long, slow, deep strokes and cross fiber friction. Deep Tissue massage is a highly effective method for releasing chronic stress areas due to misalignment and postural problems, repetitive strain injuries, and past lingering injuries. Due to the nature of the deep tissue work, open communication during the session is crucial to make sure you don't get too uncomfortable and soreness one to two days after the massage is common.
**Trigger Point Myotherapy (Neuromuscular Therapy)**
TPM is the most effective type of massage therapy for lower back pain caused by soft tissue injury (muscle strain). Trigger Point Myotherapy is also called Neuromuscular Therapy.
TPM consists of alternating levels of concentrated pressure on the trigger points in your body. Trigger points are tender areas of tension similar to acupressure points, except they occur in the belly of the muscle rather than along the energy pathways of the body and are caused by physical, mental and emotional stress paired with ischemic areas of tissue (knots). The pressure is usually applied with the fingers, knuckles, or elbow. It is extremely important to communicate with the massage therapist regarding the pressure. The therapist will respond accordingly. This therapy is often slightly painful, but the pain is described by most as a "good pain" followed by deep relaxation of the muscle.
Sports can be damaging to a body and can often lead to both short term, acute injuries and long term, chronic injuries. Sports Massage can prolong the athlete's career and enhance performance by helping to prevent injury, reduce the pain and swelling of soft tissue damage, calm and focus the mind, increase flexibility, and improve recovery rates. Sports Massage is also highly effective in promoting the body's natural immune function, which means less time on the sidelines.
**Pre-Natal and Post Natal Massage**
Pre-Natal massages use very specific techniques developed especially for the expectant mother and the safety of the developing fetus. Pregnancy is a time of great expectations and great discomforts. A woman goes through many physical, emotional and mental changes throughout the pregnancy and pre-natal massages help to ease the tension from sore muscles and joints as well as calming the mind and promoting relaxation. Many women claim to sleep better, have easier labors, reduced feelings of stress or anxiety and better range of motion and skin elasticity. This massage is especially great for low back pain and helps to promote baby's health as well due to improved circulation, breathing and reduced stress.
Post-Natal massage is very important to the new mother's comfort and well-being. Becoming a mother and the stress of having an infant at home all compound with the actual physical stress of labor and delivery to leave the mother feeling drained of energy, lacking mental clarity and physically in pain. Post-Natal massage focuses on the re-alignment of the pelvis and lower back, while promoting increased circulation and muscle relaxation. Benefits include enhanced mental clarity, better, deeper sleep, decreased muscle soreness and tension, improved posture and range of motion of the joints and lessened anxiety.
To ensure the safety of both mother and child, Pre-natal massages are ONLY scheduled during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. We request that you receive your physician's written approval before scheduling a Post-Natal massage.

I have a bad leg and I come to Erin twice a week to help me out. She does wonders for me! My leg feels so much better. Since her massages are custom, I get exactly what I need. Her prices for regular customers is amazing!
I had a wonderful experience with Erin. She is competent, down to earth, and easy to talk to. I especially like that, rather than picking off a menu of services, she will cater the massage to your needs. I highly recommend Erin and have passed her name along to my friends.
I see Erin on a regular basis, sometimes for pain, sometimes to just relax, but it is one of the best things I do for myself! She is a very intuitive therapist and she really takes the time to explain why she's doing what she's doing or why she recommends certain types of home care. Her prices are really budget friendly and the home studio is amazingly relaxing. I love her as my therapist!
I just started coming to Erin. She can do amazing things! I'll definitely become a regular customer! ~ Mary
I feel blissfully boneless-BONELESS!-after an appt with Erin. I don't realize how physically I carry even normal daily stress until Erin lifts it away with her tireless hands. She was meant to have this occupation.
I have been using Massage Mechanics for prenatal massage for the past several months with my second pregnancy. What a difference it makes! Instead of being achy, out of breath, and lethargic like I was with my first pregnancy, I'm basically pain free, able to work full time and chase after my toddler! I wish there were a rating higher than 10. I've visited a few other massage therapists on and off and Erin is fantastic at what she does! I can't recommend her highly enough.
Erin is excellent in every way. I now sleep better with no pain after my first visit. On a scale of 1-10...I give her a 15.
this woman is the best!
Love the new studio on Laky Murray Blvd! I'll see you again next week for my regular 90 min massage!
Erin is the real deal! Search no further for the perfect massage therapist. I booked a back-to-back massage for my boyfriend and I this past valentine's day, and it was wonderful! I didn't realize the amount of tension I have manifested these last few months, Erin was able to work through everything like she could feel my ailments and knew exactly what I needed! My boyfriend has never been in for a massage, so his experience was truly a treat. We believe Erin is of rare quality and professionalism. We will definitely be making monthly appointments from here on out.
Thanks So much Erin!
